LATINA, capital of a province and important agricultural and trade centre of Latium, is situated in the middle of the Pianura Pontina (Pontine Plain), 70 km on the southern side of Rom. Erected in the course of the thirties following to the drainage of the Pontine Marshes, Latina is the “youngest” city of Italy and together with Sabaudia, Aprilia and Pontinia - nowadays - it represents an important example of “rational” town-planning. Its outskirts offer an outstanding range of natural sceneries: not just islands, beaches, rocky coasts and plains but - moving towards the hinterland - also hills and some of the lower mountains of the Apennine chain. Particularly worth visiting are: the archipelago of the Pontine Islands, whose volcanic origin is proved by the suggestive morphology and by the peculiar colours characterizing it; the promontory of Monte Circeo (Mount Circeo), national park preserving historical-naturalistic environments of great value. Villages worth visiting are: Sperlonga, famous village owing to its costal caves, is 60 km away and holds an interesting archaeological area; Terracina, renowned tourist and seaside resort, is 40 km away and rich of tokens tracing back to the Classical and Medieval Ages; Ninfa, ancient medieval hamlet and seat of one of the most suggestive botanical gardens all over Europe, boasts of plants brought from different places of the world. And the Castelli Romani (Roman Castles) in the end…well-known localities with medieval origins, situated on the Roman hills where the Popes and the patrician families built numerous castles around which have developed the real villages of the present days such as Frascati, Marino, Castel Gandolfo, Ariccia and so on. Interesting trips to: Sabaudia is 25 km away, San Felice Circeo is 35 km away, Gaeta is 70 km away, Rom is 70 km away, Naples is 175 km away.
