DESCRIPTION OF THE LOCALITY
MARCHES - With its uncrowded landscapes, the central Italian region of Le Marche has a reputation as a place yet to be discovered by tourism. Yet
there is so much for visitors to discover here between the Adriatic and the Apennines - historical, artistic, cultural, natural and culinary delights await you.
The region as a whole is made up of five provinces, of which Pesaro and Urbino is the northernmost. The province is named after two towns both well
worth a visit - the coastal resort of Pesaro with its beautiful beach and outstanding sights such as the Palazzo Ducale on the Piazza del Popolo, and the
small inland town of Urbino to the southwest, a UNESCO world heritage site since 1998 thanks to its unique architecture and eventful history. Bramante
and Raffael were born in this beautiful town, where visitors are literally surrounded by Renaissance culture. To the south of Pesaro and Urbino is the
province of Ancona. A delight not only for lovers of fine wine, the port and provincial capital of Ancona is the gateway to charming little towns such as
Jesi and Staffolo, followed by rolling hills where the most famous grape of Le Marche is grown - Il Verdicchio. Those more inclined to underground
adventures would be well advised to take a trip to the Frasassi Grottoes: these karst caves are among Europe's most beautiful and impressive. The third
province in Le Marche is Macerata, also named after its provincial capital, famed mainly for its annual open-air opera festival. Along with Recanati, the
birthplace of the famous poet Giacomo Leopardi to the east of Macerata, the medieval town of Tolentino to the west is equally worth discovering. The
Giotto frescoes in the Basilica San Nicola are an absolutely captivating sight. Fermo is the youngest of the five provinces - with its first elections taking
place in June 2009! Yet the provincial capital of Fermo, looking down from its hilltop location, boasts impressive architecture and excellently preserved
Roman baths from the pre-Christian era. But true water-babies should head for the sea, for example taking a trip to the little coastal town of Civitanova
Marche. How about freshly caught fish for dinner? The southernmost province of Le Marche is Ascoli-Piceno. As broad swathes of the entire region have
been declared national parks, it comes as no surprise that this province has one of its own: the Parco Naturale dei Monti Sibillini.
